Why does it matter where they are grown?

Chianergy® chia seeds are sourced from lands where chia has been grown for centuries. Some of the specific farms we contract to grow chia have been growing it for generations.

As with most plants, when you remove seeds from the original place they have been grown and plant them in a different climate, altitude, longitude and latitude they will adapt to that particular area - changing somewhat in their composition of nutrients, size, shape and many other attributes. This has been the case of chia seeds grown outside their native lands of Central America.

Chia grown in different locations shows differences in Omega-3 content and other fatty acids¹. This is also similar in other oil crops such as soybean, sunflower and safflower, with these changes attributed to one or more of the environmental factors mentioned above.

High temperatures also have an affect on chia and other oil crops, causing the levels of Omega-3 to decrease due to the heat during the growing season. This in turn causes the other fatty acids to increase to protect the seed, so it can be fit enough to germinate without being destroyed by the high temperatures.

We have noticed the difference in taking chia seeds grown outside their natural environment, as have many of our customers, which lead us to investigate the reasons why. Because of our findings we are currently only selling chia seeds grown in the lands where they have been grown for centuries.
